Visual Research Workshop – My outcomes

In today’s workshop we swapped our artefact/image with another student to study. The aim was to create your own image – in charcoal – whilst using elements of the original piece of art. This was a good activity in analysing other people work and taking aspects of it into your own. We then used this study as a reference to create another one in colour. This shows a process of development, taking one image and working on it over and over to create something new and unique.

I then went away and researched the artist, the piece of art and the process of it. In this piece Ernst uses the technique ‘Frottage’ – the act of placing a material over texture and taking a rubbing from it. Above you can see the complex textures created by this process, the bones of fish frottaged to create the effect of trees. I have been keeping a journal of the research I took which is helpful in finding inspiration in a wide range of different artists work.

We then created 3- Dimensional studies of the finished drawing. Here I used the leaves to form a layered base to the sculpture, and I transformed the sketch into a 3-dimentiosional tower.

The last task was to write three key points learnt in the research of the artist and their work. These would be given to the person who originally chose the artefact for them to use towards their own work. I found this a useful idea in collaborating ideas and to work from other peoples chosen art.


Richard Deacon – Empirical Jungle

For my chosen artefact for this subject project, I found an interest in this sculpture displayed at The National Museum Cardiff.

I was originally drawn to its form and body like limbs of the sculpture, the way it seemed to twist into itself like a figure, but also the way it stands, as if holding itself up but dripping towards the floor all at once.

Another observation was where the sculpture was placed, and it seems to be pushed under the staircase of the museum and I thought it strange that it wasn’t displayed in an open space. Maybe the angular, structural stairs are there to contrast with the smooth curves of the limbs in the art piece.

I want to start investigating this artwork, the artist, and use materials to play around with shape and form in my own way.
